Overview

Tasting Soul Food is a hidden gem nestled in a private home at 7141 W Comet Ave, Peoria, Arizona, bringing the heart and soul of Southern cooking straight to the desert. This small, family-run spot, helmed by Chef Steve and his wife, delivers a genuine, warm dining experience that feels like coming home. It’s clear that their goal extends beyond just serving plates; they dream of expanding with a food truck, which will surely make their soulful eats more accessible to a broader audience.

The menu is a celebration of classic soul food staples, spotlighting dishes like fried catfish, shrimp plates, beef ribs, collard greens, okra, and cornbread muffins that echo the flavors of the South. What stands out is the generous portion size paired with affordable pricing—ideal for those craving authentic comfort food without breaking the bank. Their Friday plates are a particularly good deal, combining meat, sides, bread, and a drink into a fulfilling meal that covers all the bases of traditional soul cuisine.

Patrons repeatedly praise Tasting Soul Food for its home-cooked flavors and heartfelt service. The fried catfish earns rave reviews for its crisp, golden-brown crust and tender interior, evoking memories of Southern fish fries. The shrimp is large and perfectly seasoned, while sides like collard greens, mac and cheese, and potato salad pack that homestyle punch, though a touch more seasoning on the vegetables might enhance the overall balance. Desserts like chocolate cake and classic cornbread offer a sweet, nostalgic finish to the meal.

The setting may be unconventional—a private residence rather than a traditional restaurant space—but that only adds to the authentic ambiance. The intimate environment fosters friendly interaction with the owners and a personalized touch rarely found in typical eateries. This warmth appeals to locals and visitors alike, especially those who long for the soul food of their roots or seek a new culinary discovery in Arizona.

For anyone searching for soul food that tastes like it’s cooked with love and history, Tasting Soul Food in Peoria is a must-try. A little surprised to find out this is a private home. Conversation with the owner I found out they’re saving for a food truck. I hope they can accomplish that. It will help build business much faster. Great catfish and shrimp. Chef Steve and his wife are super nice. I’m visiting from out of town so not sure when I’ll be back, but I’ll try next time I’m in Phoenix. Give it a try!

I called & placed my order & he said 10 mins. Lol it was ready when I got there. & HOT! Fish & shrimp platter w/ Mac n Cheese, & Green beans.... & dinner roll & choc cake & a Rc soda to flush it down for $15 That fish tasted like he caught it & fried with perfection of golden brown with a lil Krunch, very tasty as well as the shrimp. Green beans & Mac n Cheese felt like u was at home & mom duke's cooked dinner....overall was that fish was hitting. My only recommendation is could use some seasoning on sides. & the Mac & Cheese u gotta do it right or leave it alone. But I will be back tomorrow for the brisket , greens, yams, & Mac & cornbread

I was looking for some home cooking like back at home in Michigan , food was very delicious and you get a lot for the reasonable and affordable price . You definitely can't beat the price and you get alot to go with what you pay for. lts hard to find places that gives you all the sides you get for $15 these days. Dessert, cornbread, pop, 2 sides, fish and Shrimp.

Best fried fish I've had since moving to AZ! Hit your plate with a little creole seasoning and some Louisiana hot sauce and its a done deal! I think it's a fair price for what you get at $15. The folks running this business are nice as can be. I recommend asking to add an extra piece of fish to your plate if you're HUNGRY. The corn bread muffin was dry, which some people like, but I prefer it softer. I will be ordering again in the future.
